Enjoy the early May Bank Holiday safely, urges NHS Surrey and Sussex

Family playing football outside

As we head into the early May Bank Holiday weekend, NHS Surrey and Sussex is encouraging residents and visitors to enjoy the break safely and to use health services wisely.

Many people will be taking the opportunity to get outdoors and spend time with family and friends. As people make plans for the long weekend, it’s important to take simple steps to look after your health and wellbeing.

To stay well, people are reminded to take sensible precautions when spending time outside, including using sunscreen with at least SPF 30 and seeking shade during the middle of the day where possible. Those affected by hay fever are also advised to get advice and over the counter remedies from a pharmacy, as pollen levels are expected to remain high throughout the weekend.

NHS Surrey and Sussex is also asking people to help ensure emergency care is available for those who need it most by making the right choice when seeking medical help. Only use 999 or attend Emergency Departments in serious or life-threatening situations.

For anything less urgent, use NHS 111 online or by phone for advice and direction to the most appropriate service. A range of urgent treatment centres, minor injury units and walk-in centres are available across Surrey and Sussex to treat cuts and grazes, minor burns, sprains, strains, bites and stings, with most open on bank holidays. These urgent care services provide expert treatment closer to home and often with much shorter waiting times than hospital emergency departments.

Local community pharmacies will be open across the bank holiday and remain a convenient first option for advice and treatment for minor illnesses such as insect bites, rashes, sore throats, and hay fever. They also play a vital role in helping people manage minor illnesses under the Pharmacy First scheme.

A list of pharmacies open during the bank holiday weekend and handy map is available.
